How to effectively reduce rotary evaporator malfunctions

Rotary evaporators are a common piece of equipment in laboratories. They are "concentration machines" that automatically rotate and heat under negative pressure (reduced pressure). They are mainly used for the continuous and efficient distillation and recovery of volatile solvents from mixtures under relatively mild conditions.

In order to reduce the number of failures of vacuum rotary evaporator and prolong its service life, the correct use method is critical. The following are the precautions when using the rotary evaporator :

1. When using the rotary evaporator, draw a small vacuum (about 0.03MPa) and then turn it on to prevent the distillation flask from slipping off; when stopping, stop the rotation first, hold the distillation flask by hand, and let the atmosphere open until the vacuum drops to 0.04MPa Stop the vacuum pump from left to right to prevent the distillation flask from falling off and sucking backward.

2. All interfaces, sealing surfaces, sealing rings and joints need to be coated with a layer of vacuum grease before installation.

3. The heating tank must be filled with water before it is energized. Dry heating without water is never allowed.

4. If the vacuum is too low, check the air tightness of the joints, vacuum tubes and glass bottles.

5. When the rotary evaporator is sensitive to air-sensitive substances, connect a nitrogen balloon to the exhaust port, and pass a burst of nitrogen to exhaust the air in the rotary evaporator, and then connect the sample bottle to the rotary evaporator. After the vaporization is complete, the pump is turned off after the nitrogen is released and the pressure is increased, and then the sample bottle is removed and sealed.

6. If the viscosity of the sample is very high, the rotation speed should be slowed down. It is best to rotate slowly manually to form a new liquid surface to facilitate the evaporation of the solvent.
