Basic rules for using rotary evaporator

Rotary evaporator, also known as rotary evaporator machine, is often used in chemistry, biology and other fields, which is a commonly-used equipment in laboratories. In daily use, we should strictly abide by some basic rules.

Operating rules of vacuum rotary evaporator:

1. Before use, the collecting bottle must be cleaned to prevent the accidental mixing of some incompatible chemicals from causing accidents.

2. The flask should be lowered into the water bath or raised so that the flask is immersed in warm water.

3. The water bath temperature shall not exceed the boiling point of the solvent, and a bath heater may not be required for some small amounts of commonly used solvents.

4. Solvents should be collected on the condenser and dropped into the receiving bottle. However, some volatile solvents will evaporate from the receiving bottle and be discharged into the sewer. To prevent this, the receiver can be used to protect the cooling bath on the dry ice condenser. In addition, an additional trap can be placed between the vacuum source and the condenser unit, and then the diaphragm pump can be used as the vacuum source.

5. If all the solvents have evaporated, it is necessary to immediately release the vacuum, lift the flask out of the water bath, and then disconnect all the power supplies.

The above are the general rules for the use of lab rotary evaporators, and we must strictly follow them. Rotary evaporator is an evaporation instrument widely used in laboratory. It is suitable for reflux operation, rapid evaporation of a large amount of solvent, concentration of trace components and reaction processes requiring stirring.
