How to improve the evaporation rate of rotary evaporator

Rotary evaporator is a commonly used laboratory equipment, mainly used for continuous distillation of volatile solvents under reduced pressure conditions. It is applied in chemistry, chemical industry, biomedicine and other fields. How to speed up the evaporation rate during the use of the rotary evaporator?

Ways to speed up the evaporation rate of vacuum rotary evaporator:

1. Increase the size of evaporating flask

The filling volume of the evaporating flask cannot exceed half of the total volume. This is to prevent overflow and provide sufficient liquid surface area for effective evaporation, so this must be taken into account when choosing the capacity of the evaporating flask. If you want to speed up the evaporation rate as much as possible, then the larger the better when choosing a evaporating flask. Because The larger the evaporating flask, the larger the surface area of the liquid, and the faster and more uniform the heating.

2. Increase the speed of evaporating flask

Increasing the rotation speed of evaporating flask can improve the heat transfer between the flask and the solvent, thereby increasing the surface area of the liquid and ultimately improving the evaporation rate. However, the rotation speed cannot be increased blindly, and attention should be paid to the turbulence problem. If the rotation speed is too fast, it may cause the turbulence, which will reduce the evaporation rate and even damage the evaporation flask.

3. Increase the bath temperature of laboratory rotary evaporator

When heating with the water bath, a lower water bath temperature is required to minimize thermal decomposition. Be careful not to adjust the bath temperature of the evaporator too high or too fast, generally recommended at 30-40 ℃, and the condenser temperature can be set at -10-0 ℃.

4. Increase the vacuum degree

A vacuum pump can be used to lower the pressure in the rotary evaporator to lower the boiling point of the solvent or ethanol, so that the recovery process can be done at a lower temperature, thereby increasing the evaporation rate.
